Beloved, long-time Daemen professor, Dr. Charles Sabatino, influenced countless students through his teaching in philosophy and religious studies, with an impact that extended well beyond the classroom. He inspired students to step outside their comfort zone, experience the diverse world around them, and strive to impact the community through acts of service.

After Sabatino’s unexpected passing in 2014, his wife, Carol, and sons, Jeff ’20 and Josh ’98, established the Charles Sabatino Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship to carry on his legacy.

“Charlie always said, ‘Everyone needs to experience different cultures to be a well-rounded person,’” explains Carol. “He was instrumental in establishing service learning at Daemen as a way for students to experience so much more outside the classroom. This scholarship celebrates that legacy.”

To date, the scholarship has enabled 29 students from a variety of majors, including Physical Therapy, Nursing, Natural Sciences, and English, to study in more than 12 countries.

Sabatino enjoyed running marathons, completing nearly 45 races – including the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he missed the explosion of a terrorist bomb by just a few miles. In addition, Sabatino taught inmates at Attica Prison for 36 years as part of a college program, and was a lifelong advocate for those with mental health issues.

Sabatino joined Daemen in 1977, and his influence is still felt across campus today.
