Haykel, ’65, English, co-authored “College Access: A Family Guide for Planning and Funding College” in 2010 and recently received the 2012 Clearmark Award for best original document from The Center for Plain Language. Charlene is currently chief executive officer of Simply Student Aid, a New York City company that published the guide.
Annmarie (Bernadowicz) George, ’66, Music Education, lost her beloved mother in May 2011 from Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 94. She is greatly missed by Annmarie and her grandchildren, Jeanette George, Joe George and Janice George Biletnikoff.
Annmarie (Bernadowicz) George, ’66, Music Education, was elected to another three-year term as a faculty senate member at Gannon University where she will also celebrate her 40th year of teaching in 2013. She was a recent past President of the Faculty Senate from 2009–2010 and honored by her colleagues with the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2010, an honor that recognizes faculty for outstanding teaching and academic achievements. Annmarie also serves on the Rank and Tenure and the Budget Advisory Committees at Gannon University.

Kari M. (Flanders) Achatz, ’07, Visual Arts Education, and Nick R. Napierala, ’09, Visual Arts Education, had an exhibit at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in June & July 2012. The exhibit encouraged youth to write on the walls and touch everything in sight. Keri & Nick combined their art and teaching experiences to create “Secret Spaces” which asked guests to create their own escape and leave a message about their favorite secret space on the walls of the room and furniture. The room featured white walls and furniture and light-colored blankets and pillows.

Linda Ann Hertel, ’66, Art, died unexpectedly on July 5, 2012 at the age of 67. Dearest sister of Jeanne M., her twin and the late Richard W. Hertel, II; dear sister-in-law of Lynn C. Hertel; also survived by several cousins and her beloved cat Toby. Linda was an art teacher for 37 years in the Depew public schools retiring in 2003.

Daughter of Mary Kelly Bishop and Thomas Patrick Dowd; stepdaughter of Kenneth Bishop; survived by brothers Thomas (Mary), Michael (Leslie Bergman) and Brian (Theresa), and sisters Mary Ann (Michael) Harrington, Jane (Jack) Shea and Suzanne Park; aunt to 14 nieces and nephews; numerous friends who acted as caregivers during her extended illness, especially Pat Wolf and Pat Tower.
Cynthia M. (Owczarzak) Frank, ’77, Elementary Education, died on July 22, 2012 at the age of 56 in Hospice Buffalo following a short illness. Cynthia is survived by her husband of 34 years, William; a son, Richard; her parents and a brother.
Rose Mary Roy, Ph.D., ’72, History & Government, the former Sister Rose Virginie, daughter of the late Leo Lucien and Mary Roy, passed away with her beloved brother at her side on Monday, April 16, 2012, at the age of 62, due to a rare form of cancer. Rose Mary leaves behind her beloved brother, Joseph John Roy, of New Hartford and numerous other relatives and friends.
