Haykel, ’65, English, co-authored “College Access: A Family Guide for Planning and Funding College” in 2010 and recently received the 2012 Clearmark Award for best original document from The Center for Plain Language. Charlene is currently chief executive officer of Simply Student Aid, a New York City company that published the guide.

Annmarie (Bernadowicz) George, ’66, Music Education, lost her beloved mother in May 2011 from Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 94. She is greatly missed by Annmarie and her grandchildren, Jeanette George, Joe George and Janice George Biletnikoff.

Annmarie (Bernadowicz) George, ’66, Music Education, was elected to another three-year term as a faculty senate member at Gannon University where she will also celebrate her 40th year of teaching in 2013. She was a recent past President of the Faculty Senate from 2009–2010 and honored by her colleagues with the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2010, an honor that recognizes faculty for outstanding teaching and academic achievements. Annmarie also serves on the Rank and Tenure and the Budget Advisory Committees at Gannon University.

She was married in 2007 to Jason, has two children, Gabriella & Ethan and is now a stay at home mom. Her best memory of Daemen College is being part of the Psi Xi Omicron sorority.

Kenneth L. Mitchell, ’03 & ’04, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and his wife, Nicole L. (Scott) Mitchell were married on September 3, 2005 and have celebrated the birth of two children, Brody on June 30, 2008 and Noah on April 12, 2010.

Benjamin Forest Plucknette, ’06 & ’08, Doctor of Physical Therapy, upon graduation he gained entrance into medical school at Touro College in NYC, for which he accepted a scholarship and commission from the US Air Force. Benjamin is an Orthopaedic Surgery Resident in Fort Sam Houston, TX.

Kari M. (Flanders) Achatz, ’07, and Nick R. Napierala, ’09Kari M. (Flanders) Achatz, ’07, Visual Arts Education, and Nick R. Napierala, ’09, Visual Arts Education, had an exhibit at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in June & July 2012. The exhibit encouraged youth to write on the walls and touch everything in sight. Keri & Nick combined their art and teaching experiences to create “Secret Spaces” which asked guests to create their own escape and leave a message about their favorite secret space on the walls of the room and furniture. The room featured white walls and furniture and light-colored blankets and pillows.

Janelle M. (Siergiej) Brandel, ’07, Early Childhood/Special Education, works in the Broward County school district. Janelle services children in the self-contained autism cluster at Park Springs Elementary in Coral Springs, Florida where she was selected as Teacher of the Year for 2013.

Kathleen Jane (McKinney) Cloutier, ’07, Nursing & ’10, Nurse Practitioner, has joined Western New York Rheumatology Center, an Amherst-based private medical practice of Dr. Sunita Chadha as nurse practitioner.

Terri B. (Ingraham) Swiatek, ’07, Graphic Design, has been named lead digital designer at Travers Collins in their digital marketing services group.

Laurie A. Fenton, ’09, Nursing, received an Alumni Nurses of Distinction Award from Jamestown Community College. The annual recognition honors nursing graduates who have distinguished themselves as healthcare providers and are nominated by their employer. Laurie is a manager at The Resource Center and is currently pursuing a master’s degree to become a Nurse Practitioner.

McKenzie M. Higgins, ’09, Political Science, made the Dean’s List during the fall 2011 semester and received the Leadership Achievement Award from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. This award is given to graduating students who have demonstrated dedication to the campus community and the legal profession through leadership and involvement in various organizations and societies. She attributes her leadership skills to the foundation laid by Daemen.

Brett M. McDermott, ’09, Professional Accounting, joined the professional audit staff as a senior accountant at Lumsden & McCormick, LLP. Brett is responsible for auditing and accounting services to commercial businesses and exempt organizations.

Martha E. Kershaw, ’10, Nursing Education, presented “Cancer Basics” at a Celebration of Science speaker series at Jamestown Community College on March 26th, 2012. The discussion included cancer and its incidence, prevention, and care. Martha is a staff development instructor at Roswell Park Cancer Institute for the past eight years.

Megan E. Tomassini, ’10 & ’12, Doctor of Physical Therapy, was hired as a physical therapist at The Resource Center in the agency’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center.

Lucy R. (Della Penta) Monaco, ’52, Music, passed away on August 10, 2012. Beloved wife of Marino Monaco; mother of Michael (Debra), Marino A. Jr. “Marty” (Michelle), and the late Carmela “Cami” (Brian) Mahoney; loving grandmother of seven.

Virginia “Ginger” Irma (Ungerer) Culligan, ’58, Art Education, entered into rest on November 14, 2011 and was the mother of Karen Culligan.

Ann Judith (Watson) Bratty, ’60, Social Studies, passed away on December 4, 2011, Survived by an uncle, Harry Bojan of Boynton Beach, FL and many cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends. Judy was a retired Social Worker and a longtime member of Business and Professional Women of Buffalo.

Linda Ann Hertel, ’66, Art, died unexpectedly on July 5, 2012 at the age of 67. Dearest sister of Jeanne M., her twin and the late Richard W. Hertel, II; dear sister-in-law of Lynn C. Hertel; also survived by several cousins and her beloved cat Toby. Linda was an art teacher for 37 years in the Depew public schools retiring in 2003.

Jean Dowd, ’70, Math Education, passed away on September 4, 2012. Daughter of Mary Kelly Bishop and Thomas Patrick Dowd; stepdaughter of Kenneth Bishop; survived by brothers Thomas (Mary), Michael (Leslie Bergman) and Brian (Theresa), and sisters Mary Ann (Michael) Harrington, Jane (Jack) Shea and Suzanne Park; aunt to 14 nieces and nephews; numerous friends who acted as caregivers during her extended illness, especially Pat Wolf and Pat Tower.

Cynthia M. (Owczarzak) Frank, ’77Cynthia M. (Owczarzak) Frank, ’77, Elementary Education, died on July 22, 2012 at the age of 56 in Hospice Buffalo following a short illness. Cynthia is survived by her husband of 34 years, William; a son, Richard; her parents and a brother.

Rose Mary Roy, Ph.D., ’72, History & Government, the former Sister Rose Virginie, daughter of the late Leo Lucien and Mary Roy, passed away with her beloved brother at her side on Monday, April 16, 2012, at the age of 62, due to a rare form of cancer. Rose Mary leaves behind her beloved brother, Joseph John Roy, of New Hartford and numerous other relatives and friends.

Mark Zuppa, ’88, Business Administration-Accounting, passed away on March 27, 2012 and was the son of Anthony and Jean; brother of John (Karen) Zuppa; uncle of Austin and Elliott Zuppa.
