Alan Herbert Turner, II, `93, Business Administration, has recently been named the new President & CEO of the United Way of Southwest Alabama, in Mobile, AL. Previously, Alan was President & CEO for the United Way of West Tennessee. Alan and his wife, Stephanie, are proud to announce the birth of a new little girl, Sara Evelyne, born July 11, 2011 and weighed 8 lbs 3 ozs. Sara joins seven year old brother, Andrew.
Marcus J. Edwards, `94, Nursing, was honored with an Alumni Nurses of Distinction award from The Jamestown Community College Alumni Association. Marcus was nominated by his employer, Warren State Hospital, where he has worked for 28 years. Marcus has been a registered nurse instructor for eight years. He has earned numerous awards, including the hospital’s 2011 Nursing Employee of the Year award.
Daniel Edward Cieleski, `97, Physical Therapy, is the Director of the Long Beach and Rockville Centre offices of Dynamic Core Physical Therapy. He has continued his education with multiple courses in mechanical diagnosis and treatment (including all levels of The McKenzie Method), spinal mobilization /manipulation, core stabilization, sports medicine, joint dysfunction, and Kinesiotaping. Dan is a Certified Kinesiotaping Practicioner. He utilizes manual therapy techniques to address joint and soft tissue restrictions, exercise to restore ROM and strength, and education to the patient to maintain progress and reduce the risk of re-injury.
Tracy J. (Schilling) Martin, `97, Psychology, and her husband, Darren, welcomed their second child, Kate Morgan on February 15, 2011. Kate weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz. and measured 20 in. long. She joins big brother, Jack Matthew, who turned 3 in May.

Joel M. Marsh, `08, Accounting and `09, Masters in Accounting, earned his CPA designation by passing all four parts of the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Exam and satisfying the work experience requirement. Joel has been promoted to senior accountant in the tax department for Lumsden & McCormick, LLP. Joel is responsible for tax compliance services to commercial businesses and individuals. He is a candidate member of the AICPA and the NYSSCPA. Joel joined the Firm in 2009 after completing a tax internship in 2008.

Sarah Elizabeth Soroka, `11, Business Administration, has signed a professional basketball contract and will take her talents overseas, signing on to join Montijo Banda Basket of Portugal’s Pro A League. Sarah headed to Portugal mid September for training camp with the season beginning on October 22.

Sister Marcyann Kowalczyk, OSF, `60, History & Government, a teacher in Western New York for more than 50 years, passed away July 14th 2011 at the age of 73. Born in Buffalo, Sister Marcyann taught at the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart from 1967 to 2009, where she chaired the History Department. Prior to that, she taught at Bishop McMahon High School in Buffalo and Mater Dei High School in New Monmouth, New Jersey. An avid swimmer and cross country skier, Sister Marcyann was given the Franciscan Charisma Award by Sacred Heart Academy in 2009. She is survived by a sister, Rita Kuzma and will be missed by the generations of students who had her as an educator.
Sister Imelda Hanshaw, OSF, `62, Business Administration, passed away on January 15, 2011 at the Stella Niagara Health Center at the age of 98. Sister entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1951 and was professed in 1954. Sister had taught at McMahon High School, Rosary Hill College, Sacred Heart School in Columbus, OH, and at Stella Niagara. She is survived by a sister, Amelda Samples; sister-in-law of Drema and Earl Mitchell; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Sister Clara Gallagher, OSF, `65, Education, of Stella Niagara, NY, passed away on June 28, 2011. In 1965, Sister Clara fulfilled a dream of her life to work with the people of Africa. She traveled to Bukoba, Tanzania where she taught from 1965 until 1971. She worked and made it possible for girls to also attend school in Bukoba.
She is survived by her sister, Marie and many nieces and nephews.
Sister Catherine Gale, OSF, `67, Education, of Stella Niagara, NY, February 18, 2011, sister of Helen Gallagher, Theresa Savely, Pauline (Carl) LaCorte and Jean Carroll, all of Columbus, OH. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth Ann (Bannan) Cowell, `72, French, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on November 17, 2010. Elizabeth left behind her husband of 21 years, Richard, and three beloved step-sons, Clayton, Sgt. 1st Class Elias and Zachary Cowell. Elizabeth taught French from 1972-1955 at East Aurora High School. She was the Special Events Coordinator at Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas from 1999-2005 until she retired.
Diana L. (Hawryluk) Burns, `79, Medical Record Administration, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2011, after an eight year courageous battle of ovarian cancer. Diana is survived by her loving husband, Bernard; five loving stepchildren; and eight grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, a brother, nieces and nephews.
Christine L. (Zielonka) Pellow, `81, Business, beloved mother of Jillian (Paul) Oleandi and Chase Pellow; cherished grandmother of Anabella Oleandi; loving daughter of Alfred (Mary) and the late Joan (nee Cuddy) Zielonka; and loving companion of Keith Szen, passed away on January 14, 2011 at the age of 51.
Laurence C. Wright, DDS, `84, Religion, August 1, 2011, beloved husband of Joan (Finley); loving father of David (Dana), James (Joanne), Douglas (Laurie) and Jonathan (Ann); also survived by 17 grandchildren and 14 great-granchildren. Larry’s primary career was as an orthodontist, and he cared for hundreds of area residents over his many years of practice. But, later in his life, Larry found another calling and came to Daemen College to earn a degree in Religious Studies. He then served as the college’s Director of Campus Ministry for a number of years. Larry loved working with Daemen students. The college chapel bears Larry’s name in recognition of his generosity of time and also resources (The Wright Chapel is located on the first floor of Duns Scotus).
Jeanne (Honegger) Strapason, `85, Humanities, passed away on July 25, 2011, at the age of 69. Jeanne is the dear mother of Anna Marie (Mark) Elsaesser and Michael (Ronda) Strapason, grandmother of Victoria and Christopher, and sister of Carol Honegger Dickson.
Donald J. Holland, Jr., `86, Art, passed away on July 4th, 2010 at the age of 45 after a long illness. He was the beloved son of Patricia (Sigrist) and the late Donald J. Holland, Sr.
Sandra A. (Galeziowski) Marasco, `86, Medical Records Administration, passed away on January 27, 2011 at the age of 49. Sandy is survived by her husband, Robert J.; mother, Elinor Galeziowski; 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
Sandy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at gatherings and entertaining them in her home. Sandy will be remembered as a giving and generous person throughout her lifetime and also gave the gift of life through her organ donation.
Albert J. Raab, `02, History Education, suddenly passed away at age 32 on July 31, 2011. Beloved husband of Melissa (nee Rasey) Raab; loving father of Madison Julia; devoted son of Judith and the late James Raab; dear brother of Katherine (Michael) Barr. Al was a devoted teacher, an avid sports fan and traveler.
